My Mobile to Your Laptop

A mobile phone video taped Saddam Hussein’s execution (oh no! I think it is this one). Now we can all see it online. Not the official video. Some witness’s phone, video. Magic. Or is it?

There was a day when this could only be explained by magic. That day is long gone. Today, wireless networks are penetrating far deeper than wired networks, into remote areas of countries around the world. For most of the planet, it is the easiest way to connect to the global network.

More and more, we are seeing connections made between mobile networks and the internet. Sending pictures and video from your phone to services like Flickr and YouTube; using your cell phone to change the message on an automated phone bank campaign; even synchronizing your server and mobile email, calendar, and contact database in near real-time are well-established technologies. We have been spinning our wheels talking about the digital divide too much. The reach of the global network is growing. The gap is narrowing. And there is a new frontier in the world of politics.

Oh yeah, and the news on the Saddam video is all about how unprofessional, especially by Western standards, his execution was. Unprofessional? That’s what we care about?
